Lightning Strikes Barry Twice

  • Barry destroyed the myth that lightning doesn't strike twice after slipping to defeat against League leaders Cilfynydd at the Reservoir Field last Saturday.
For the second time in a month they have been on the wrong end of the scoreline to the same opponents, with the winning scores coming in injury time in both matches, and only 5 points separating the sides over the two games.
This game will be remembered for the huge defensive performance required to keep their opponents at bay, together with some fine threequarter play which created three tries in the 21 - 22 defeat.
The opening minutes saw Cilfynydd eager to move the ball at pace but despite their possession Barry were equal to it.Cilfynydd
had a shock only minutes into the game when after conceding a penalty in the Barry half they had to watch as Barross stroked the ball between the uprights for an early lead.
Clearly stunned by this reverse the visitors set themselves up with their strong scrum and lineout providing plenty of ball and following a series of forays a hasty clearance from Barry gave them the space they needed to create a converted try under the posts and a 7 - 3 lead.
However some positive play got them back upfield and as Cilfynydd infringed Barross was once again on hand to kick the penalty and reduce the lead to 1 point.
As in previous weeks Barry struggled at the restart but managed to regain possession and clear.Cilfynydd failed to control the lineout ball allowing Barry to break upfield where a try looked certain only for the pass not to go to hand and the chance had gone.
Cilfynydd came back onto the attack but their efforts were marred by unforced errors and increasing penalty offences.
Barry got themselves into visitors territory again and a charge down clearance gave them an opening which after they recycled the ball saw the move spread wide to beat the covering defence giving Brad White the try which Kyle Barross duly converted and as half time neared they had moved into an lead at 13 - 7.
This shocked Cilfynydd into action but still their over eagerness and infringements were costing them dear as two try opportunities were wasted as Barry held firm under the onslaught.
It was Barry who had the final scoring chance of the half, but this time the penalty chance missed as the whistle went.
The second half began with an immediate penalty award to Barry for crossing and Kyle Barross made no mistake adding three points to the scoreboard.
A game of cut and thrust developed as both sides attacked and defended but the pressure was building on the home defence
as Cilfynydd sought to reduce the deficit in a game they were looking to win with a bonus point.Their pressure was rewarded
as they were to take the lead with two quickfire tries in a matter of minutes
Firstly quick scrum ball gave them space and as the ball was recycled they found a gap in the home defence for a converted try out wide.
Despite winning the ball at the restart Barry were penalised taking Cilfynydd into the Barry 22.Driving the resulting lineout they forced their way over the Barry line this time for an unconverted try but more importantly the lead at 16 - 19.
This set back fired up Barry and for the next minutes their aggression disrupted the visitors as they fought to get back into the game. The reward came almost immediately as a sniping break from Kyle Barross broke the home defence giving Tom Perry the try, but unfortunately for the second time in the match the kick hit the upright.
Now leading 21 - 19 Barry kept up the momentum and had forced Cilfynydd into a tactical change as they now were kicking ball away for territory rather than their preferred attacking style.
They did have some success with this tactic as Barry were pinned in their own half and defending for their lives.A try looked certain as Cilfynydd broke the defence only for the ball to be dropped in the act of scoring the try.
Barry seemed to have weathered the storm as they finished the game the stronger as the game entered injury time.A lineout on the Cilfynydd 22 meant they only had to control the ball and the game would have been won.
Unfortunately they were unable to control the ball and Cilfynydd were able to drive  upfield and gain a lineout. The resultant drive was halted by Barry but the referee saw an infringement and awarded Cilfynydd the penalty which was kicked to win the game 21 - 22.
A truly heartbreaking end to a match that Barry with their effort and commitment really deserved to win
The next fixture for the First XV is on 28th April when they travel to Gilfach Goch, also fighting for promotion.A coach will leave the Club at 12.30pm
There are no games this weekend, however the Club will open at 3pm for The Scarlets European Cup encounter with Leinster.
No Lottery winners again last week as the jackpot increases to £1400 this Saturday. The numbers were 03 - 15 - 19 and 21.
No success for consolation prize either as no ticket matched 3 numbers.
