Bonus Point Win for Barry

A bonus point win for Barry away to Clwb Rygbi sees them move to joint third in the table.

Despite the 32 - 18 scoreline Barry were made to work hard for their victory against stubborn opponents who threatened to derail their progress for large parts of the game

Clwb got off to the best possible start after early Barry pressure was stemmed.A long 22 drop out by Clwb saw play taken to close to the Barry line where a penalty award turned into a converted penalty try as Barry transgressed

The early setback woke Barry up and they proceeded to use their possession to gain territory despite coming second best at the set piece. A penalty took Barry

to the home 22 where following a forward drive the ball was released to the backs and Tom Perry coming onto the ball at pace crashed through the defence to score under the posts giving Kyle Barross the easiest conversion which brought the scores level.

An attack straight from the restart looked to have given Barry another try only for a last ditch tackle to save the day and earn Clwb a penalty to relieve the pressure.

.The frantic start to the game ended and saw the game settle down as both sides looked for territorial advantage with neither prepared to yield.Clwb were ending on the wrong side of the referee as the penalty count grew, and Barry took advantage of this to take the lead with a further Kyle Barross penalty.

That lead lasted only seconds as Barry infringed at the restart to allow Clwb to draw level at 10 - 10 as the half wore on.

Barry hit back again as the game see sawed either way, when after driving into the Clwb half they spread the ball and a long Perry pass found Luke O'Sullivan to cross wide out for an unconverted try.

The scoring continued and this time it was Clwb who were rewarded with an unconverted try as Barry again failed to stop the forward drive from a short range penalty bringing the scores level once again.

That was not to be the final score of the half however as Wayne Jones caught the restart to take play deep into the Clwb half where the recycled ball found Einan Scott who's cross kick to the corner was somehow gathered by Dave Provis to score a well executed try and with Kyle Barross successful with the conversion Barry led by 22 - 15.

There was still time in the half for Clwb to set up an attack and as Barry again were penalised  they took the option of 3 points for the half to end 22 - 18 and all to play for in the second period.

Barry came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders and kept play in the Clwb half where their efforts proved fruitless as the combination of gritty defence and poor decision stopped them adding to the scoreboard.

Clwb were to lose two players to the sin bin but still thwarted all Barry's attempts to score  and in fact played some of their best rugby during this period.

Back at full strength it was Barry's turn to defend as they were reduced to 13 players and for a while it just seemed a matter of time before Clwb scored, but huge credit to all players as they defended for their lives and withstood the onslaught for several minute

For most of the half at this time Barry had refused penalty chances at goal to seek the fourth try and a bonus point. The change of heart gave them two quick opportunities in quick succession, the first from fully 60m hit the post, the second saw Kyle Barross successful to give Barry a 7 point lead.

As the game entered it's last minutes Barry continued to seek the elusive bonus point and with Clwb tiring and conceding penalties the chance was there.

The try when it came was well worked by the threequarters following a strong forward drive to create space on the outside for Tom Perry to cross for his second try and with Kyle Barross adding the extras Barry drew clear at 32 - 18.

The match finished with that scoreline and they can thank the tremendous defensive efforts in those minutes they were reduced to 13 players which denied Clwb any points.

The win takes Barry to joint third on points, and with the two sides above them due to be played in the next few weeks some exciting rugby awaits

It was also a great day for the 2nd XV who travelled to unbeaten Rumney and came away with a bonus point win by 24 - 5.Two tries and conversions to Dylan Robertson were added to by John Miles and Harry Moyle for an emphatic victory.

The next fixtures will, due to the Wales v Ireland game, be on 3rd March when the 1st XV take on Cambrian Welfare and the 2nd XV meet St Peters both at home kick off 2.30pm.
