Barrians advance in Cup

The Barrians survived a second half blip to go through to the next round of the Ron Locock Cup in the expense of their visitors Penarth.

On a day where many other matches were called off due to inclement weather, both sides arrived at Reservoir Field trying to play flowing rugby and in doing so entertained a substantial crowd.

It was the Barrians who had the better out of the earlier exchanges, as they utilised the powerful running of their midfield to create opportunities for their backs.

The home side raced into a 17-0 lead with less than a quarter of the game gone with Ashley Adams and Evan Wall amongst the scorers.

Despite the missed kicks the hosts were not concerned as they seemed to have already put the game to bed.

Penarth, however, had other ideas, and struck back before the half hour mark with a well worked try out wide which was unconverted.

The home side responded by upping the ante once more, resulting in fine tries by Mike Hamonda and Dominic Busuttil.

Both tries went unconverted but at the interval Barry were leading 27-5.

It was a different story in the second half as the visitors came back into contention.

Penarth appeared a different side as they dominated territory and possession, as they muscled their way back into the game with their forward power with three unanswered tries, all expertly converted.

As the game reached its climax Barry were stung into action.  Finally stringing some passes together the hosts had several chances to breach the whitewash but a lack of accuracy and poor decision making in the red zone saw the chances go begging.

Eventually it was route one which opened the door as the forwards battered towards the line, with Jon Morris crashing over for his second try in as many games.  Substitute Ryan Corrigan nervelessly converted to give his side a two-score cushion.

There as to be no further comeback by Penarth but they have contributed greatly to an entertaining cup tie.

Next weekend 1st XV travel to Cambian Welfare whilst the Barrians host Old Penarthians.
