Barry finish season on a high

Barry 2nd XV finally returned to action with a visit to the capital to face Clwb Rygbi.

Manager Joel Williams was forced to dig deep into his pack after the hosts requested the game to be moved forward to Thursday evening at less than 24 hours’ notice.

The result was a largely unfamiliar side with players out of position – including a prop forward on the wing no less - and veterans Liam Scott, Gerwyn Pugh and Ken Chow called to a half-empty replacement bench.

The disruptions did not appear to hamper the visitors as they were the first on the scoresheet with a try in the opening minutes.  The less said about the attempted conversion by Richie O’Sullivan, however, the better!

Barry did not let their momentum slip and was attacking the home line from all angles.  Quick exchanges in open play see them score another unconverted try.

Trying to make sure that the missed kicks would not cost them the result, the visitors piled forward again, and a sharp break from scrum-half Tom Cotter saw the ball spread out wide to Ethan Dicks who raced through to score.

The hosts were trying to play, flowing game of rugby and was finally rewarded when they put themselves on the scorecard with a well worked converted try.

Would that signal a swing in momentum?  The answer was a definitive ‘no’ as Barry scored twice more before half time to put the result and bonus point beyond doubt.

With Scott on soon into the second half Barry continued to try to press home their advantage and there were further scores from hooker Dave Evans and utility back Luke Hewitson.

Clwb had two converted scores of their own as they continued to play an attractive brand of rugby as they game broke up as the Barry players tired.

In the end the visitors came through as handsome winners in what turned out to be last game of their season after this weekend’s game against Rumney was called off.

It has been a hard season for the 2nd XV but hopefully the playing and coaching staff can take this result onwards to next season.
