Barry efforts deserved more

By Andy Jamieson

Barry again faced strong opposition in the form of League leaders Rhydfelin at the Reservoir Field last Saturday and despite going down to a 17 - 6 defeat their overall efforts deserved something better.
Last minute changes didn't help the cause, but the fact that the second half was pointless is an indication of the commitment of the squad and with a little bit of luck could have earned them at least a bonus point.
Again facing a heavier and taller pack Barry were under immediate pressure from the kick off as the visitors used this advantage to drive at the Barry defence which held firm.
Barry were to take the lead after weathering the early pressure as a counter attack caught the visitors offside and Einan Scott did the honours.
The lead was short lived as Rhydfelin used every opportunity to make use of their forward advantage to finally drive from a lineout to cross for a converted try and a 7 - 3 lead.
Buoyed by that success the visitors continued to pressure the Barry defence but were met with an equally determined defensive effort and the line held.
It was perhaps inevitable that the score would come but this time through their backs as quick hands saw the ball spread to outpace the home defence to score an unconverted try wide out.
Barry kept at it and got themselves into the visitors 22 where they earned a penalty calmly converted by Einan Scott to take the score to 12 - 6 as half time neared.
Barry had to endure more pressure in those minutes but a harsh penalty decision against them saw the visitors again drive the resulting lineout to cross for an unconverted try and a half time lead of 17 - 6.
Opening the second half with the advantage of the slope it was Barry's turn to go on the offensive where a fine break by Alyn Evans saw a chance created but spoiled by a forward pass.
Rhydfelin were soon back on the attack searching for the bonus point try but Barry matched them for effort and came more and more into the game as the minutes rolled by.
A huge Barry effort took play close the line when it looked like a score would come only for the referee to spot an infringement.
The resultant scrum saw Barry for the first time put the visitors eight in reverse and what could have been a penalty try to Barry was not spotted by the official.
The pressure was maintained as Barry attacked again and a clever cross kick from Einan Scott just evaded the supporting chasers and the chance was lost.
At this stage the visitors had done little attacking in the half but still continued to look dangerous when the chance came but the Barry defence somehow managed to survive.
Enjoying plentiful possession and territory Barry continued to press but found it difficult to break down the visitors defence and were unable to add to their points tally.
Barry had one more defensive effort to make as the minutes ticked by but again saw it through as the final whistle blew to end the game 17 - 6.
Again another huge effort from the Barry squad which deserved more.
After facing the top two in the table, the pressure doesn't let up this weekend as Barry entertain unbeaten Rumney at the Reservoir Field this Saturday kick off at 2.30pm
