Barrians go marching on

BY JOEL WILLIAMS

After a late pitch inspection due to the wet weather conditions of the last couple of weeks, the Barrians returned to action in the Ron Lucock cup against familiar opposition. Having defeated the same opposition a fortnight ago the home side came into the match with expectations high.

Playing up the slope it didn’t take long for the Barrians to exert pressure on the opposition line, with this pressure resulting in tries by Ashley Adams & Ethan Dicks, Ryan Corrigan was successful with both conversions from close range. Barry would have extended their lead to 21-0, from a Lloyd Dutton break, only for Jon Morris to prematurely ground the ball on the 5 metre line. Luckily the clearance from Old Penarthians was fielded by winger Rhys Knapman whose Mazy solo run split the away sides defence sliding in beneath the posts. The conversion was again a formality for Corrigan.

Having gone into the second half with the score 21-0 the Barrians were expected to push on and use the slope to their advantage. Old Penarthians however were to benefit from the break and cause the home sides defence problems, the pressure told and the referee reached into his pocket to send the Barry scrum half to the sin bin for 10 minutes. Two quick fire tries from Old Penarthians followed and put the Barrians under pressure before the strong carrying from captain Tom Haigh, Lloyd Dutton and Jay Ashill swung the game back towards the home side.

It was Ashill who would benefit from the swing, a strong carry resulted in a clean break from 40 metres out. A couple of sidesteps and a hand off for good measure, resulted in him going all the way and claiming his first try for the club.

It was from this try that the result seemed to be Barry’s to lose, the shackles were released and some clever passing from the backs utilized the pace in the back 3 and further tries from Knapman, Bounds and Forrester came in quick succession. This win now puts the Barrians into the ¼ finals of the cup which is to be played on December 14th.

The Barrians return to action on 16th November welcoming Pentyrch 2nds to the reservoir fields.
