Match report - Barry v Rhiwbina - 26 March

Admiral National LeagueDivision One East Central Barry 27 Rhiwbina 36

Report by Ken Watkins

Barry’s spirited second half fightback fell short at the Reservoir Field on Saturday, Rhiwbina inflicting a fifth straight defeat on the Bombers. Conceding tries at crucial times, and the occasional lack of discipline, didn’t help the cause, but Barry ended the match on the front foot, a welcome positive.

The game doubled as a Mallett Cup quarter-final fixture, and while head coach Liam Scott was disappointed at missing out on the chance of taking on neighbours Dinas Powys, he had no complaints about the effort of his players.“It was very physical, got tasty at times, and I don’t think any of them shied away from it. I can’t fault the passion, and I understand that, but we have to manage it better. We can’t practice discipline in the changing room,” he said.“We allowed them territory and possession time and time again.”

The damage was done in the first half. A contentious try, we get chopsy to the referee, they get a penalty and score again. Ultimately that let us down, chopsing the referee and giving away penalties.”

Barry made an unfortunately all-too-familiar start, conceding a try inside two minutes, Chris Williams scoring, and Elliot Jones adding the extras. Rhiwbina did it again at the start of the second half, Jones touching down and then converting to give Rhiwbina a 20-point lead.

Einan Scott landed a penalty after seven minutes, but Rhiwbina replied with two tries in three minutes. Seb Ripley went over in the 16th minute, ending a move which appeared to include a knock on.

Then, following a penalty on the Barry line, Williams got his second, Jones converting.Tom Perry ended a spell of Barry pressure, Einan Scott converting, after 23 minutes, and Scott added a second penalty three minutes later to narrow the gap. But a catch and drive in the 39th minute saw Jamie DeAbreu go over, Jones putting Rhiwbina 26-13 ahead at the break.

When Jones landed a penalty in the 50th minute, for a 36-13 lead, it looked like game over. But Alyn Evans barged through in the 52nd minute, Einan Scott converting as Barry’s fightback began. Despite spending a lot of time in the Rhiwbina 22, penalties and some determined defence checked Barry pressure until the 80th minute when Evans grabbed his second, Einan Scott converting.

Liam Scott was encouraged by the second half showing, and the players were in a positive mood after the game. That faces a stern test on Saturday when the Bombers visit unbeaten Mountain Ash.
