Barry return to winning ways

Fielding perhaps their strongest side for some time, Barry produced a much improved performance against struggling Cambrian Welfare at the Reservoir Field last Saturday where they produced a much needed bonus point win by 26 - 14.
With both sides trying to play an open and expansive game but with neither able to get the breakthrough, it took an error in attack by Welfare to give Barry the opening score.
A loose pass was hacked through by Barry where the ball found Harry Moyle in support to cross for the try, with Kyle Barross kicking the conversion for a 7 - 0 lead.
Barry had further chances during the next minutes and were unlucky not to score again, but is was Welfare to do just that as a series of penalty awards in their favour took play into the Barry 22.Moving the ball  they drove at the Barry defence , and scored a  converted try to bring the scores level
The game of attack and counter attack was providing entertaining to watch but failed to produce any scores.
Two quick penalties in succession for Barry took them close to the line. They didn't waste the opportunity as they drove the lineout,
finally taken by Alyn Evans to bundle his way over for the try added to by a fine touchline conversion from Kyle Barross giving Barry a 14 - 7 lead as the half drew to a close.
Welfare had the slope advantage in the second half which begged for a change of tactics from Barry. Sensibly they began kicking for territory with some success as Welfare were kept on the retreat.
Their efforts were rewarded as a penalty took them into the visitors 22. From the lineout they drove at the Welfare eight with again Alyn Evans on hand to cross for their third try, the conversion sailed just wide but the lead had been stretched to 12 points
A break from deep by Welfare deserved a try, but Barry saved the day to concede a 5m scrum.Unfortunately they were caught cold as the No 8 picked up at the base to cross unopposed for a converted try and now just 5 points separated the sides as the tension mounted.
With a lot at stake Barry continued to play intelligent rugby and slowly worked their way into the visitors territory. The quick up Barry defence unsettled Welfare leading to a Barry scrum 15m out.
Controlling the ball well, Luke O'Sullivan deceived the defence to cross for an individual try, rewarded by another fine touchline conversion from Kyle Barross, leaving Welfare needing two scores to get level as the clock ran down.
With so much at stake for both teams in terms of League points, the game became quite frantic, but Barry's second half tactics were working successfully leaving Welfare little change for their efforts and despite several attempts they failed to add to their points tally.
No further score as the final whistle went as the fog got worse, but Barry had run out worthy winners for a bonus point win.
Despite all four tries being scored by forwards, the efforts of the backs cannot be underestimated, especially in defence and this really was a team effort. The spirit perhaps not seen for a few games was back and made all the difference.
They will need more of that this week as they travel to play Rhiwbina in a rearranged fixture.on Friday night kick off 7.30pm.
Please note this fixture is being held at Llanishen High School and not at Rhiwbina
