The inclement weather was not to anyone's liking as Barry played their penultimate League Match at home against a "rejuvinated " Taffs Well side last Saturday. The conditions allied with the physical size of the opposition certainly gave supporters concern pre kick off. Their concerns were quickly proved correct as the home scrum was sent into retreat in the early exchanges. To counter this Barry were playing an open game attempting to spread the ball around, keeping the heavier opposition on the move and were having some success as they made ground toward the visitors line where from the resulting ruck, Goodfellow crashed through for the opening try which Scott duly converted for a 7-0 lead. The visitors were playing to their forward strength as expected and despite some heroic defending the home side were to concede a try as they were driven back near their line. Despite their forward dominance, Barry still managed to get some reasonable possession of their own and that together with some benefit of Taffs Well indiscretions gave them a foothold into the visitors half which resulted in Scott kicking a penalty to increase the lead. Significantly the visitors continued to earn the wroth of the referee as the penalty count against them increased enabling Barry to both avoid the set piece and gain a territorial advantage which produced another two penalties which Scott calmly slotted over to give the home side a 16-5 lead , a lead they had thoroughly earned, bearing in mind the torrid time they were experiencing up front. As the half came to a close it was the home side doing most of the attacking, culminating with a fine 60yd break by White, set up by superb attacking defence.which just broke down near the line, leaving Barry 11 points to the good Now playing with the slope in worsening weather, the scrum continued to be a problem for the home side, but somehow, mainly due to good work at the back from Jones, they were managing to frustrate the visitors. However Taffs Well changed tactics and began to try to get their backs into the game but were met with a good defensive effort from a determined home side. They let their concentration slip as they conceded a penalty which was taken quickly and allowed the visitors to reduce the lead with an unconverted try to reduce the deficit to 6 points. Buoyed by that success Taffs Well continued to attack and blew a further chance when the backs were deemed to have been in front of the kicker with the home defence at sixes and sevens. At this stage the Barry eight had finally got some parity up front as the bigger visitors forwards began to tire, a great credit after the pounding they had suffered for most of the game. The game had changed to Barry's advantage with plenty of possession enabling them to launch attack after attack at the visitors line. As solid as the home defence had been throughout the game so was that of the visitors who managed to hold out and prevent Barry scoring any further points. The visitors were rewarded for this in the dying seconds with an converted try and the final whistle giving the home side the win they richly deserved after a game which is probably physically, the hardest they had this season Their bodies were probably aching, but the pain seemed to ebb away following a few sherberts and the pleasure of seeing Liam Ring's initiation following his Ist Team debut. Barry's final game of the season is next Saturday against Old Illtydians in a game that could decide whether the Club will achieve promotion to Division 2 for next season. There are too many alternatives to explain here, but suffice to say a win would be enough to see them through. The game takes place at Moreland Park kick 2.30pm, so come along to give them the support they deserve.
