Barry complete second half fightback

Barry ended their season with hard fought win against Gilfach Goch having to come back from being 16 points down after just 25 minutes.

The opening minutes belonged to the visitors as Barry struggled in the scrums giving them early opportunity to use their speedy backs to threaten the Barry line.

Following a penalty to touch Gilfach drove the lineout  before spreading the ball for an easy try and conversion.Only minutes later after Barry had been on the attack Gilfach found themselves close to the Barry line again once more where again the forwards took control to cross for a second unconverted try and 12 point lead.

Desperate to get themselves into the game Barry found some momentum with breaks from Evans, Perry and White which finally led to a penalty which saw Barross get them on the scoreboard.

A series of errors by both sides from the restart saw first of all Barry go close after O'Sullivan had hacked the loose ball to be denied just short of the line. Regaining possession Gilfach launched a counter attack which went the length of the field and while Barry halted the initial break they were unable to stop the second thrust which saw them cross for a converted try and into a 16 point lead.

The inability of Barry to get quality first phase possession was hindering their attacking options and putting pressure on the defence.

A stroke of luck saw Gilfach lose the ball while on the attack allowing quickthinking O'Sullivan to kick ahead, regather and sprint 70m to cross for an unexpected try and with Barross adding the extras to go with a penalty kicked minutes earlier Barry were suddenly back in the game with the deficit down to 6 points as half time approached.

Barry looked livelier as the second half began and added to their total with a further Barross penalty and it was now game on.

Getting parity in the scrum was enabling Barry to launch their own attacks and with Scott at 10 controlling things they began to ask questions of the visitors defence, forcing them to concede a string of penalties.

Taking play into the visitors 22, Barry created a move which tied in the Gilfach defence allowing E Scott to cross for a good try and Barros's

successful conversion put them in the lead for the first time at 23 - 19.

Both sides continued to keep the game open with chances being created at either end, and efforts from Scott again and Perry deserved a better outcome and it was Gilfach who were next on the scoresheet as Barry conceded a penalty.

Back came Barry from the restart taking play into the opposition 22 and with Gilfach infringing on the floor Barross kicked the resultant penalty to restore the 4 point lead.

With the minutes ticking away play ebbed and flowed and despite having to be on their guard the Barry defence remained solid as they held on for the win.

A  good way to end the season with the win putting Barry clear into third place in the League for the second season running.

This squad is still young and can only develop further in future, so with congratulations to all players, coaches and management the season comes to a successful end and roll on September.
