Barry gain crucial bonus point win

Barry travelled to Llanharan on Wednesday night knowing that only maximum points will do as they continued the hunt for promotion.

Coaches Jon Bryant and Liam Scott were able to welcome back Einan Scott and Tom Lee at half backs, with Kyle Barros reverting to full back.  Sion Vidal and Sam Bowditch were recalled in the front row with Dave Provis also returning in the pack.

Barry tried to play a wide game right from the off, but whether it was the floodlights, the midweek fixture or the changed personnel, the enthusiasm in attack was not matched by the accuracy.

The visitors did take the lead when Barross converted a penalty opportunity.

The hosts, showing a much changed side to the one that faced Barry just weeks ago, pounced on some uncertain play from the green-and-whites and retaliated with a well worked try out wide which was unconverted to take the lead.

Stung, Barry stormed forward and this time they showed more structure and patience as they began to make their dominance in their backs tell.

However, it was the forwards who finally produced the breakthrough, with Lucas Davies burrowing over for the team’s first try.  Barross added the extras to put Barry 10-5 up.

Sensing the momentum swinging their way, Barry did not let up in their attack as they searched for another score.  Chances were created but a lack of accuracy, and some curious refereeing decision, saw no more scores until the stroke of half-time.

This time the forwards laid on the platform to allow the time and space for Tom Perry to cut a line through the Llanharan defence to score under the posts.  Barross’ conversion made it 17-5.

At half time the job was only half done and after the interval the visitors continued to go for the jugular as they searched for the bonus point.

After Barros’ unerring boot added another three points, a third try duly arrived when a break out on the left saw smart exchanges and good hands, with the ball finally reaching Brad White who finished expertly.  Barross again added the extras.

The win was now almost secured but it was the fourth try that Barry wanted.  Llanharan still had the upper hand in the scrum but Barry were begin to negate that threat with some excellent back row work from Harry Moyle, John Miles, and Provis.

After weathering some sustained Llanharan pressure, substitute Alyn Evans made the break in midfield which set up the field position for Barry to unleash the backs, cutting through the home defence to see White storm through for his second try and his team’s fourth.

With Saturday’s crucial game at Taffs Well in mind, the coaches emptied the bench but there was no let up for Llanharan as the visitors continued their assault on the home line.

It was Dave Provis’ turn next to get on the scoresheet as the veteran powered over in the corner for an unconverted score.

The home side continued to battle hard but were visibly tiring as they conceded penalties and territory.  There was still time for substitute Chris Lockyer to break through for a fine individual try with Einan Scott converting.

The final score was 44-5 to Barry but that was not a reflection to the endeavour and industry of the hosts who fully contributed to the contest.  We wish them the very best for the next season.
