Barry produce complete performance

Barry produced a magnificent all-round performance to win their fourth game on the trot, beating Clwb Rygbi 20-0 at Reservoir Field on Saturday.

Buoyed by their large cup win the weekend before, Barry restored captain James Hadfield to the starting line-up, looking to a similar quick start in this game.

The weather conditions, for the first time this season, were not akin to the Indian summer that all have been enjoying, and it was the visitors who adapted better in the first quarter of an hour, with their outside half finding space and gaps in the defence.

The early pressure applied by CRCC did not, however, transfer into points, and when the Barry back row of Hadfield, Owain Poole and Hywel Jones began to exert their dominance in the break-down area, the home backs started to look menacing.

Breaks in midfield by Tom Perry and Brad White saw Barry gain precious territory, and after applying continuous pressure, James Hollister took charge and there was no stopping the juggernaut from five metres, the prop crashing over for his third try of the season.  Einan Scott’s superb conversion from out wide saw the lead extend to seven points.

Clwb looked rattled by the reversal of fortunes and despite still having meaningful possession, seemed to run out of ideas when faced with a watertight Barry defence.  Instead, it was the home side who forced indiscipline in the CRCC ranks, and Scott’s boot put the green-and-whites further ahead.

The Barry pack was, by now, dominating their opposite numbers, both in loose play but especially in the scrum.  This gave Barry the platform to apply more pressure to the Clwb defence which transgressed into a penalty opportunity.  Scott’s unerring accuracy meant that Barry led by 13-0 at half time.

Using the slope and the boots of Kyle Barros and Scott, Barry started the second half where they left off, as they looked to put the game to bed.

Once again the home side turned their dominance into points.  This time it was a brilliant set-piece move from behind the powerful scrum.  A snipe from scrum-half Tom Lee set the wheels in motion, and his offload to Perry was perfectly timed for the centre to score under the posts.  The conversion was a formality.

Just as Barry dreamed of a possible bonus point, the game began to break up due to a spate of substitutions, and also the referee’s affinity to his whistle.  The latter would meant that four yellow cards were produced in the final quarter, breaking up the pattern of play for both sides as the game meandered to an end.

Ultimately the performance by Barry was an encouraging one, and all the players, management and coaching staff should be congratulated.

There is no game for the club next weekend due to the World Cup final which will be shown on the big screen in the clubhouse.  Afterwards there will be a Halloween Party – please contact Ken Chow for tickets.
