Barry edge local derby

Barry took the spoils in a bristly encounter at Dinas Powys last Saturday with a late Kyle Barross penalty giving them the victory by
21 - 20
The game didn't get off to the best of starts for Barry as they quickly conceded four penalties all from kickable positions.Lucky for Barry they chose not to go for goal, and bearing in my mind the final score, those decisions came back to haunt them
The early pressure was all from Dinas who camped in the Barry 22,but an improved defence and unforced errors kept them at bay.
One such attack saw Dinas lose the ball under the Barry posts. The alert Tom Perry saw the space and raced downfield. With the defence catching him a crossfield chip ahead found Kyle Barross who raced in from some 30m for the opening try which he failed to convert but Barry had a surprise lead.
The expected response came from Dinas keeping play in the Barry half but with nothing to show for it after 30mins Barry still held the lead.
For that time the Barry defence had been resilient and somewhat improved from the previous week although one to one tackles were still.being missed on occasion.
One such situation proved to lead to Dinas opening their account with a converted try and the lead at 7 - 5.
The final minutes of the half belonged to Dinas but they were unable to add to their score.
Barry opened strongly from the second half restart and were rewarded with a 50m penalty from Kyle Barross to retake the lead which they only held for a couple of minutes as Dinas finally took the option to go for goal from a penalty to go back in front at 10 - 8.
Playing with a bit of confidence, Barry piled on the pressure and a series of penalties saw them driving lineouts finally getting the reward as Alyn Evans crashed over for the try which again was unconverted.
Again Dinas came back and a further penalty saw them bring the scores level at 13 - 13.
The game became srappy for a  few minutes as accuracy from both sides was letting them down, but the tighter Barry defence and tackling was beginning to frustrate Dinas and encourage Barry to greater efforts.
These efforts were wasted however as a close interpassing move was telegraphed and Dinas raced for an interception try and conversion against the run of play but into the lead at 20 - 13.
Barry were not to be deterrred as Dinas conceded two quick penalties which saw play taken into their 22.Driving the lineout Barry moved forward retaining possession finally creating space for Alyn Evans to cross for his second try of the afternoon, the conversion which would have levelled the score sailed just past the upright, and now it 20 - 18 with just minutes remaining.
Sensing a victory Barry continued applying the pressure and again forced Dinas into conceding a penalty, where the boot of Kyle Barross saw the kick sail between the uprights for a one point lead at 21 - 20.
Gathering the restart, Barry controlled the ball and ran the clock down as the final whistle went to give them a win certainly their second half performance deserved.
Barry are obviously a work in progress competing at this level. But this performance showed a marked improvement on the previous week and the hard work being put in by Coaches and Players alike is slowly being rewarded.
