Despite having to make changes from the previous week, and losing three players to injury in the pre-match warm-up, Barry produced an outstanding performance to clinch victory against one of the strongest youth teams in the Cardiff region.
With St Peter’s including Cardiff Academy and Wales players in their squad, head coach John Dimond was anticipating a tough challenge. “We reshuffled and brought in boys to do a job. They’ve all trained well enough, and their levels are so good they can step in,” he said.
The level of rugby from both sides was, he said, “outstanding. That win is probably our best so far this season. We’ve shown again we are not far off the best. The ball is still rolling, and we’re still unbeaten.”
Barry led 5-0 at the interval, having had the wind at their backs in the first half. “I didn’t think it was enough,” said Dimond. “We were going into a Force 10 gale in the second half. But we stuck to what we had to do. We had to defend hard, stuck together as a unit, and fought for every scrap.
The Bombers scored two breakout tries in the second half, but St Peter’s hit back with a late score which made for a tense last five minutes.
