Barry RFC Youth put a powerful marker down with a 50-12 victory at Pontypridd in their opening WRU Admiral Youth Cardiff Premiership Blue League fixture on Saturday, running in seven tries.
Pontypridd are Barry’s opponents in the quarter-final of the WRU National Youth Cup, the tie scheduled for the Reservoir Field on 4 March.
Barry took a little while to get going. “It was a bit of a slugfest early on,” said head coach John Dimond, but after 15 minutes Barry began to move the ball around, and tries soon followed.
Barry initially declined to kick penalties in front of the posts, but when they changed tactic and took the points, the game opened up. “Once we scored, everyone relaxed a bit and we started to work as we should, and began to run in tries.”
Initially Barry were pinned in their own half after the interval, conceding penalties. But once they turned over possession in their own half they surged away to score. After that Barry started to spread the ball wide and dominated again.
Barry scorers. Tries – Cameron Williams 2, Joe Gatt, Braydon Griffith, Daffyd Jones, Dylan Lewis, Finn O’Donovan. Conv – Wil Humphreys 4, Braydon Griffith 2. Penalty – Wil Humphreys.
